Along came a shoe designer...and you thought you'd spend another Spring/Summer in those tired 'red bottoms' - NOT! Meet Italian shoe candy maker, Burak Uyan who debuted his collection, last spring. Already a hit with famous folks (that we won't name here), Mr. Uyan is one to watch (especially before
your favorite rap artist or actress keeps mouthing his name off). The colors are youthful and bold and the aesthetics are made of custom skins. Burak spent past design positions at Alberto Marani in Paris, then Givenchy and lastly Giambattista Valli before finding his passion of designing shoes. He initially launched in 2009 with Alessandra Lanvin before launching on his own in 2011 and the rest as they say is history!

Somewhere in Brooklyn: The wait is over - we finally have gotten settled into our new space in Brooklyn and boy oh boy - we are AMPED for Spring/Summer 2012 fashionable wearable's. There are so many things to be excited about from frocks to bold prints but we won't overwhelm you just yet. We'll start slow with showcasing (5) key looks you should have to kick start your Spring wardrobe.

(1) A Tribe Called Quest...Spring Gets Tribal (yes, this continues, but WE LOVE IT):

(2) Thinking of being my baby, it don't matter of you're Black or White: The Black and White Trend is back in all of its glory...nothing new here folks, but you can mix and match however you see fit. BONUS: Don't put away your wide leg pants for Fall/Winter, they will segue perfect into Spring/Summer, so long as the material is light and airy.

(3) They say the NEON lights are bright on Broadway...Oh so 80's but with a little stylish twist - we likey!!! Check out one of our faves from Michael Kors resort 2012 - yes, the high-slit is also a staple, whether maxi dress or skirt.

(4) Pastel, Pastel, Pastel!!! Yes, finally. A softer hue that makes us girls feel so pretty.

Whatever you do, make your pastels a solid combination, even if you mix.

(5) Bold Color-Blocking...Another not-so new trend which was all the rave last Spring as well, but we're not complaining because we love it - especially Pink, Red and Orange together - ohh la, la. For this trend, instead of selecting one garment that is fully blocked, we suggest pairing separates together of bold colors - and throw in a fierce shoe to throw the naysayers off. Besides, matching is so faux pas.

We love fashion fairy tales and the story of fashion designer Laquan Smith, is just that. Denied admissions by our beloved Fashion Institute of Technology, not once, not twice, but three times, LaQuan's frustrations turned his passion for fashion up a notch. With a sewing machine purchased for him at the age of 13 as a Christmas present, Laquan got busy and created the master pieces you see before you. Oh the story doesn't begin there. LaQuan would crash fashion parties and shows wearing his very own designs. LaQuan, 22, being from Queens gives him that extra aggressiveness not afforded to all. And as they say, if you can't make it there (NY that is), you can't make it anywhere. As fairy tales go, fashion publicist Kelly Mills was among one of the many parties LaQuan was crashing and his fashions soon began turning up on the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Take that FIT! Hey LaQuan, we got denied admissions too for fashion design at FIT so we're bitter, even though we went back and got into the FMM program - we understand what a denial is - those bums. Eh em, ok - we digress. Back to LaQuan's fairy tale...before you go thinking LaQuan has made it big time, he works out of his 150 square foot bedroom of the apartment he shares in Queens with his grandparents. Although we're sure he'll be moving on up like George and Weezie pretty soon. Especially since Andre Leon Tally, Vogue's Editor-at-large has taken up mentoring LaQuan. LaQuan Smith will be one to watch and we can't wait to see him take over the world, one fashion garment at a time.

Just in time for this year's turkey day, Black Friday and just your all around chance to shop for something fashionable, H&M confirms it's collaboration with France's oldest couture house Lanvin. The designer label will offer up both a men and women's wear, respectively and man, we can't wait. The fresh pieces will be designed by Alber Elbaz and Lanvin menswear designer, Lucas Ossendrijver and the collection will unveil on November 2, 2010 via a film on H&M's website. The womenswear collection will offer up 30 garments and 15 accessories. Christmas arrives in November for some H&M fashionistas - happy shopping!

This is certainly a step in the right direction, and because we heart MJ, we can't help but get on board with this one. Kudos Marc! We welcome the notion. We look at shoes as 'works of art' and hell no - we wouldn't attempt to wear these, but staring at them from our closet is enough for us. Boyfriend jackets, classic trenchcoats and relaxed looks mixed with a little nautical tease enhances these looks and we love it. We're excited and can't wait to see what Fall will bring. Haute Now: Zac Posen for Target

NYC: (where else)...Fashionista's start your engines! Zac Posen introduces his hi-lo pieces to Target beginning April 25th. For those of you lucky enough to live in the tri-state area, um, that would be NYC and surrounding areas - you can get your Posen fix before all the other folks. As if we need any other reason to miss living in NYC (besides the god forsakened cold weather) there will be a Pop Up Shop at 34th and 8th street. The sale is being called a 'shopping party' of sorts with a full DJ, and get this - it runs for 24 hours only and starts at 11pm. I can only imagine the foolery that will ensue with cocktails, first dibs on a Zac Posen collection and crazy music blaring out of speakers. Sounds like my kind of par-taye! Good luck getting in and send us photos and scribble 'where you wish you were' to instigate.

The above photo is of a Zac Posen for Target, tiger print dress that will retail for $39.99 - we likey. However we have reviewed the other pieces of the entire collection and let's just say - um, no ma'am - FAIL. The pricing ranges from $16.99 (that would be for a pair of socks) to $199. The day I buy an article of clothing out of Target for $199 is the day I've completely lost my mind. I'm mad for fashion so I guess, never say never...imagine Louboutin for Target at $199....hey, a girl can dream! I digress. We're proud of you Zac, do your thing boy!

Key looks are:

Hot pants / boy shorts
Military and tribal wear (we've seen this for the last couple of seasons)
Sporty looks take the high 'couture' road
Jumpsuits and rompers - reloaded!
Denim, denim and more denim!
The monseiur blazer
Chiffon and lace (quite scary but we can dig it!)
Pattern and bold mixed prints

Key colors: Navy, Hot Red, Bright Yellow, Heather Grays & lots of pastels.

The great thing about trends is that you may already have one or any of these looks in your wardrobe and you NEVER want to over-trend. 1-2 pieces of any trend is more than enough to mix with hi-lo pieces (high end with low end fashions). All RUNWAY looks are not for you, REPEAT - ALL RUNWAY LOOKS are not for you - so stop it please. The purpose of RTW - is just that - Ready To Wear. Some of the looks on runways are not for everyday wear - for any of us and it's still all good. We love fashion so we understand the meaning of a 'fashion show'. :)

London: The lovely Ms. Kelly Rowland attended the Grey Goose Character & Cocktails Winter Fundraiser for Sir Elton John's AIDS foundation at the Grosevenor Hotel in London on Sunday, December 13, 2009.

The designs of Basil Soda (as shown in the photo) were also on display and Mrs. Kelly represented them well as she strutted her stuff in a lovely season's best Indigo silk gown. Although started in 2001 as a fashion house in the Middle East, Basil Soda is still under the radar - but not for long. We love understated glam, and who would not be impressed with corsages, accessories, lace, satin and silk interplay.

Well, we saw this one coming....Ebay launched it's first holiday store in New York (where else) in November and to everyones wonderment it was stocked with L.A.M.B. shoes, Norma Kamali exclusives for Ebay, Michael Kors accessories and even M.A.C. makeup. Yep, I know what your thinking, if you wanted these things, you'd go to your neighborhood mall (at least that's what we're thinking). But, we digress.

Enter Ebay Fashion Vault. Keeping up with the Joneses is hard to do these days, but ebay is managing it well with their new site dedicated to a sort of 'sample sale' type atmosphere - think Gilt.com and Ruelala.com. Ahhh, now we can breathe because here you can find designer duds that you really want such as Tom Ford sunglasses and OMG - Catherine Malandrino pieces. Even though they started with a Cole Haan sale (yawn), we're sure they will pick up, where these other sample sales dropped off. C'mon Ebay, stop running with the 'flea market' theme and get with it - we know you can do it! Hey if Narciso Rodriguez has an 'exclusive' line for ebay, they have it going on...baby steps indeed.

Yep, you heard it here first! Jean-Paul Gaultier will follow suit (no pun intended) with other high end designer contemporaries in Target's "Designer Program" such as Mr. Mizrahi, Anna Sui, Monica Botkier, Richard Chai...well you get the point. This spring 2010 we will be in HEAVEN as Gaultier's pieces decend upon 250 Target stores nationwide.

This collection will, according to WWD, be available from the 7th of March 2010 in more than 250 Target stores across America and online at www.target.com until the 11th of April. The collection would pay homage to American pop culture. Naomi Sims: A True Iconic Fashion Legend

Naomi Sims: 1948-2009

Few of us are firestarters or trailblazers in what we do. However, one could not say the same for Mrs. Naomi Sims, a true iconic fashion legend and dubbed the first Black Supermodel; paving the way for Beverly Johnson, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks respectively. Resepect is indeed in order for someone who defied the odds, refused to sell-out, became self-made in an era where being a black entrepreneur (especially a woman) was slim to none and overcame. How's that for supermodel - Naoimi embodies the true sentiment of the word. It doesn't hurt that she attended our fellow school of FIT - NYC. Gotta love that! Take note on the bio and have a seat.

Naomi Ruth Sims was born at Oxford, Mississippi, on March 30 1948. Her parents divorced soon after her birth, and she never knew her father, who worked as a porter (her mother, however, later confided that he had been "an absolute bum"). Mrs Sims took her three daughters to live in Pittsburgh, but Naomi was subsequently brought up by foster parents. At Westinghouse High School she towered over her fellow pupils, who responded by ostracising her.

Her resolution to make something of her life took Naomi, in 1966, on a scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, which she combined with night classes in psychology at New York University. When she decided to become a model, however, her early encounters with the agencies were not encouraging: all turned her down, some taking the trouble to explain that her skin was too dark. Deciding to bypass the agencies altogether, she went directly to fashion photographers – a tactic that paid off when Gosta Peterson, a photographer for The New York Times, agreed to do a shoot for the cover of the newspaper's August 1967 fashion supplement.
While this was a considerable coup, Naomi Sims still found it difficult to get work. Eventually she told Wilhelmina Cooper, a former model who was starting her own agency, that she would send out copies of the The Times's supplement to advertising agencies, attaching Ms Cooper's telephone number; the agency would get a commission if Naomi found any work.

Within a year she was earning $1,000 a week, and appearing in a national television campaign for AT&T wearing the creations of the American designer Bill Blass. "It helped me more than anything else because it showed my face," Naomi Sims told Ladies' Home Journal in 1968. "After it was aired, people wanted to find out about me and use me."

Soon she was also modelling for other eminent designers, such as Halston, Teal Traina, Fernando Sánchez and Giorgio di Sant'Angelo. Black women began to emulate her slicked-back hair style. Her acquaintances included Salvador Dalí and Andy Warhol.

By 1972 Hollywood had begun to take an interest in her, and she was offered the title role in the film Cleopatra Jones (1973). She declined after reading the script, which she said was racist in its portrayal of blacks.

Accordingly, she abandoned modelling after five years to launch a wig-making business for black women. At first she baked synthetic hairs in her oven at home to create the texture of straightened black hair; but within five years her designs, manufactured by the Metropa Company, had annual sales of $5 million.

She later expanded successfully into beauty salons and cosmetics, and wrote a number of books, among them All About Health and Beauty for the Black Woman; How to Be a Top Model; and All About Success for the Black Woman. She also wrote an advice column for teenage girls in Right On! magazine.

Italian Vogue All-Black Returns With Retro Barbie...Now That's Hot!

In an effort not to overstate the obvious, Vogue's Italia edition makes a comeback with a black barbie doll fashion spread - for joy, for joy! What a fun and genuis idea from the clever mind of Vogue editor Franca Sozzani who last year put out the first ever Vogue Italy edition of all black models in one spread to show just how much the fashion industry lacks diversity. I'm sure some of the models featured in last year's edition were unheard of to the masses prior to going to print; unless you acutally follow fashion to the letter (like we do - Liya Kebede is our absolute fave) and see some of the sisters in other publications. The first black barbie doll, "Francie" came out in 1967, however she wasn't produced until 1980. Yes, 1980 for those of you who think the world over that folks aren't judged on the color of their skin. 1980 is only 29 years ago. WOW! And yet, here we are revisiting the same old tired issue of the ugly ill's of racism that not for nothing another country, not our own - dared to tackle....(deep sigh). We've got a long way to go, and while this may be seen as a marketing ploy by Mattel and Vogue to reintroduce the new black barbie doll titled, "So In Style", we thank you Franca, for your courage, love and respect and hell, knowing what's hot!

MILAN (Reuters Life!) - Italian designer Giorgio Armani's home division is to deck out the interior of exclusive apartments in Rome, as part of a project to convert a historical building into a complex of luxury serviced flats.
Some 62 apartments are planned in the Cavour220 project -- a residential block occupying 12,000 sq m (129,200 sq ft) and composed of six linked buildings surrounding a garden.

"The scheme was conceived from the desire to transform the ancient buildings of a quarter on the slopes of the Palatine Hill into a prestigious, sophisticated, cutting-edge residential complex," Armani said in a statement.
The complex is located on Via Cavour, that leads to the Coliseum. The project also involves Doughty Hanson & Co European Real Estate Fund II and property developer Europa Risorse. The first apartments will be ready for occupation in the first half of 2010

CFDA 2009 Awards.....And The Nominees Are?

17Mar09 NYC: The Council of Fashion Designers of America have announced the nominees for the coveted 2009 awards ceremony. 2009 Womenswear Designer of the Year nominees are our fashion friend (in our head) Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodrigeuz, Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy. While we wish all the "otha" nominees well, they can all have a seat because Mr. Marc is going home with this one (fingers and toes crossed). Marc is also a nominee for the Menswear Designer of the Year and will also receive the International Award for his work with Louis Vuitton. We could bore you with the sordid details of naming some of the other nominees, but why - we really just wanted to write about Marc. :) Good luck to all nominees.

The CFDA will dabble with politics a tad bit by honoring First Lady Michele Obama who critics agree is quite the fashionista and have made an impressionable mark in media. We are still ill from that nasty choice of Musty Green during the inauguration and those hideous GREEN flat shoes - wait a minute - ew, we had a flashback. We certainly hope that wasn't the work of a stylist and just a missed mark by Mrs. Obama. We would style you for free Mrs. Obama and then blog about it of course - we do love you! Anyway she made up for it (see picture below) in that beautiful pearl white ball gown by emerging designer Jason Wu who in fact is a nominee for the CFDA's Swarovski Award for Womenswear. In an effort to save a few extra coins and expenditures, this year MJ decided to not only scale back the guest list but nix the entertainment fiasco's that besieges most shows. Who needs Anna Wintor, Kanye and fluff when your Marc Jacobs bitch! Marc brought the ode to New York City and the 80's back in one flash of a show and we loved every minute of it. Although we still wouldn't be caught dead in Marc's Fall pink acid washed jeans (don't quote us either), we loved the bustiers and coats. Having lived in NY ourselves and headed back, Virtual Stylist knows all too well just how dark NYC can be, especially in the Fall. Mr. Jacobs lit it up with hints of neon colors everywhere - think Willy Wear circa 1986. Those in tune with fashion know exactly what we're talking about. Honestly, VS has studied with the best of them at FIT in NY and what I love most about fashion is the artistry. It really lacks the "art" these days. But hey, don't take my word for it - see for yourself. Be YOU in fashion is the best advice one can give. Nothing wrong with mixing trendy with vintage, but for peete's sake - DO NOT dress from a mannequin. Make your own style and live it up! Ok, now that I've screamed at you.........

Oh George - Part Deux!

18Jun08 - VS has recovered from George Michael Mania and as promised I have made mental notes for you poor souls who couldn't attend the show. (Deep breath) OK, first up since I am reporting this days after the show, I wasn't arrested, but YES I did drink a little too much of the happy juice being served at the Toyota Center.

If I had to describe the show in one word: INCREDIBLE! Georgie did not disappoint, from the soul brothers and sisters on back-up, to the 3-tierd band stacked on top of one another. The stage was divided into 3 dark sections at first glance. Lights out - OMG - it's 3 freaking full screens that displayed all sorts of colors and images throughtout the show. Images from Marvin Gaye to JFK to Josephine Baker. This is why we love Georgie. He's FREE and we love it! VS was gasping for air when he did the Gap Band's, circa 1980 "Burn Rubber" (Why You Want To Hurt Me).....the crowd may have been slow to catch but a "true" soul sister such as myself was mouthing every word. Next up, an orchestrated version of Roberta Flack's circa 1972, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."

All of your favorites were sung. "Fast Love" started it off and the crowd lost it and "FREEDOM" closed the show - perfectly! In between were Careless Whisper, Too Funky, and countless others. Of course, George's fashion sense were on point. Crisp and suited with European boots - we love it! He even poked fun at himself once again when he sang, "Outside" and changed into a policeman's uniform. If you remember in 1998 Mr. Michael's being arrested in LA in a public restroom for "engaging in a lewd act" with an undercover policeman. All is forgotten George.

The only songs notably absent were Monkey, I Want Your Sex (which the crowd begged for but to no avail) and 1984's smash hit, "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go". Damn shame because VS was ready to do her greatest Belinda Carlisle dance to that song. I guess I was saved from myself.

VS gives this show 2 thumbs through the roof! Next up, Janet Jackson, October 2008....stay tuned my fashionable friends!

14 Jun 08 - Virtual Stylist is pleased to announce that she will be in sheer delight to see George Michael live in concert at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. I will report back with all the fashion sightings and, OMG - the music! That's what it's all about. And remember, that's Mr. Michaels to us mere mortals............we are not worthy!

Why we love George? Because he's a non-conformist - period. The music matters, without all the hype and self-righteous nonsense that has overshadowed what THEY call music today. There is a cause greater than ourselves, and that is to uplift someone in need. Kudos to George who has never been afraid to "Fight The Power!"

PS: For bragging rights, I must post my tickets just in case the camera I attempt to sneak inside to get a glimpse of George is confiscated and I'm thrown in the pokey and miss the show (fingers crossed).

An Ode To Yves Saint Laurent

1 Jun - Virtual Stylist was very saddened to hear of the passing of the King Of Couture, Mr. Inventor of the Ladies Trouser Suit himself, Yves Saint Laurent. What a better way to honor him in life and death by pulling out a pair of my favorite summer sandals fashioned by the one and only himself! Where would us girls be if it hadn't been for Mr. YSL creating stylishly conceptualized femme monsieur suits & sexy tuxedos. (SIGH) I miss him already, who can forget the trademark glasses and well tailored suits he effortlessly wore. He took the bore out of fashion and made it his own, even running the house of Dior upon the pioneer's sudden demise in 1957 at the ripe age of 21. After suffering a nervous breakdown in 1962, Yves was released from Dior and he and his partner, Pierre Berge started their own fashion house. The rest as they say is history. YSL took the road less traveled when it came to design - and we love him for it. We also love him for "recognizing the real" and being the first designer to use black models in his runway shows - kudos to you Mr. Laurent - may you rest in everlasting peace. Ahh, so the time has finally arrived. According to reports, the "it" bag business is about to suffer a backlash. The celebrity driven nonsense of average consumers having to have the exact same bag "as seen on" their favorite pop star is coming to a hault, do in part to the current economy's recession. A senior fashion analyst at Mintel, quipped that, "women have become more cynical about the handbags they carry." Well, duh.........if you have to put gas in your Mercedes, what comes first? Cavalli Rocks At H&M NYC

The self-proclaimed Rock Star showed up to the H&M 5th Avenue Flagship store to find fashionistas who had been sleeping outside as early as 7pm the night before. He quipped, "I spoke with London and Milan and they said, after two hours, everything was sold out!" While that's impressive, even more impressive is the fact the the entire bottom floor of the 5th Avenue location sold out in 2 minutes flat. WHOA!

The first 150 people in line received gift cards ranging from $5 to $300, a signed ad campaign poster and a Cavalli T-shirt. Not bad for freezing in the brrrr cold and sleeping like a vagrant for a couple of hours.

Remember Virtual Stylist reported this summer that the male diva, Mr. Cavalli was coming to H&M, well..........he has arrived.

The Gap appoints Patrick Robinson to EVP of Design

Patrick brings his broad range of fashion design experience from high-end couture to mass market retail. Prior to his tenure at Paco Rabone in Paris, Robinson held senior design leadership at Anne Klein and Perry Ellis.

Kudos to Patrick, although he went to the rival school of Virtual Stylist. That school being the Fashion Institute of Technology....ok, I'm over it.
